The third generation of Audi A4 (B7) was launched in 2005 while still utilizing the existing Volkswagen B6 (PL46) platform though none of the Volkswagen’s cars is currently using this platform. (Audi is 99.7% owned, and a subsidiary and marque of Volkswagen Group since 1964).
Audi introduces its own fuel saving technology called “Fuel Stratified Injection” (FSI) on the 2.0 liter Turbo FSI and 3.2 liter V6 FSI petrol/gasoline engines. Due to the introduction of FSI, the 3rd generation of Audi A4 is equipped with four-valve per cylinder design (the 1st and 2nd generation of Audi A4 is running on five-valve per cylinder).
