Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a British manufacturer of luxury automobiles based at the Goodwood Plant in West Sussex, England. It is the current producer of Rolls-Royce branded automobiles, whose historical production dates back to 1904. The factory is located across from the historic Goodwood Circuit in Goodwood, West Sussex, England. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the BMW Group.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd began manufacturing cars in 1903. The factory at Goodwood is the fifth Rolls-Royce UK based automobile production facilty since the company was founded in 1904. The previous four were located in Manchester, London, Derby, and Crewe.

The characteristic RR badge on the front of the grill changed from red to black in 1934 upon the death in 1933 of Henry Royce. The Phantom III of 1934 was the first Rolls Royce to display the black badge, being the first car without input from Mr. Royce.

A stipulation in the ownership documents of Rolls-Royce dictated that Rolls-Royce plc, the aero-engine maker would retain certain essential trademarks (the Rolls-Royce name and logo) if the automotive division was sold. Rolls-Royce plc chose to license not to VW but to BMW, with whom it had recently had joint business ventures. VW had bought rights to the "Spirit of Ecstasy" bonnet (hood) ornament and the shape of the radiator grille, but it lacked rights to the Rolls-Royce name necessary to build the cars. Likewise, BMW lacked rights to the grille and mascot. BMW bought an option on the trademarks, licensing the name and "RR" logo for £40m, a deal that many commentators thought was a bargain for possibly the most valuable property in the deal. VW claimed that it had only really wanted Bentley anyway.

Rolls Royce is on a Roll, Increases Sales by 20% in 2008

So what if the entire auto industry is undergoing one of worst recessions in modern times; Rolls Royce not only managed to stay afloat but the BMW Group owned luxury carmaker saw its sales increase by 20 percent in 2008. Last year, the British firm retailed 1212 cars compared to 1010 the previous year, thus marking the fifth consecutive annual sales increase since the company was re-launched by BMW in 2003.

"This is a tremendous result and particularly gratifying considering the challenging economic environment manufacturers faced in the second half of 2008," said Tom Purves, Chief Executive Officer. "Once again much of this success lies with the highly skilled and dedicated workforce that we have at Goodwood."

As one would expect, North America remained the brand's biggest single market in 2008, accounting for 38 per cent of sales. In other markets, Rolls Royce saw its sales grow by 95 percent in Northern Europe and 48 percent the Middle East while the Asia Pacific region saw continued sales growth in markets such as Australia, China, India and Singapore. The firm's top 5 worldwide dealers in alphabetical order where Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Beverly Hills, Dubai and London.

Project Kahn's Tastly Modified Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

Unless you're a fan of 'Pimp my Ride', there are only so many mods one can perform to a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe without making it look like a rice-racer. Project Kahn, tuning specialist of all expensive and exotic vehicles, knows this all too well. Their subtle tuning proposal for the convertible Phantom limits the exterior changes to 22-inch alloy wheels (two different designs) and the polished front radiator grille. For the interior, Project Kahn adds a Rolls Royce Logo embossed in the front headrests, elm cluster veneer wood fascia panels, piano black steering wheel spokes and an iPod connector.

BMW Group Global Sales Plummet 25.4% in November

The continued market downturn resulted in a significant decline in sales in November for the BMW Group that consists of the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands. The automotive group saw its global sales in November plunge by 25.4% to 96,570 units compare to 129,459 the same month a year ago. From the beginning of the year, the BMW Group has delivered a total of 1,323,572 vehicles, down 1.8% from the first 11 months of 2007. In November, BMW brand car sales were down 26.2% to 81,357 units, MINI sales fell 20.8% to 15,103 while Rolls Royce reported a 18.5% decline to 110 vehicles.

For the first 11 months of the year, global sales of BMW brand vehicles are down 3,5% to 1,105,112 units while MINI's are up by 7.6% to 217,405 as are Rolls Royce's by 28,5% to 1,055 vehicles .

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, said "Global automotive market demand fell once again in November. However, during the period to the end of November the BMW Group performed better than the overall premium segment and has increased its market share in the segment. In addition two of our three premium brands MINI and Rolls-Royce continue their growth over the 2007 sales results. The MINI brand is still the world's fastest-growing premium brand."
